Most Korean given names are written with Hanja (Chinese characters), and the same syllable can be written with many different characters, each with its own meaning. Parents choosing a baby name — and adults filling out documents — often need to find the exact character behind each syllable.
Each character is identified by its meaning (hun) and reading (eum). Saying “이을 승” points to 承 (to succeed/inherit), while “오를 승” points to 昇 (to rise). This tool searches exactly that way.
South Korea restricts birth-registration names to the Supreme Court's approved list of over 8,000 characters (인명용 한자). Always confirm a character is on the list before registering a name.
