Understanding Your Place in the Global Income Distribution

Have you ever wondered how your income compares to the rest of the world? While most of us compare salaries with colleagues or neighbors, the global perspective tells a very different story. Even a modest income in South Korea places you far above the world average.

1. Global Income Inequality in Numbers

The world median income is approximately $10,000 per year (nominal). The richest 10% of the global population earns more than $20,000 annually, while the top 1% earns above $60,000. If you earn the Korean median income of about 35 million KRW (~$27,000), you are already in the top 15% globally.

2. How the Calculation Works

This calculator converts your Korean Won income to US Dollars and applies a log-normal distribution model based on global income data from the World Bank. The log-normal distribution is widely used by economists because income data is positively skewed — a small number of people earn very high incomes.

3. Korea's Position Among Nations

South Korea's average income of roughly $27,000 places it among high-income countries. For reference, the US average is ~$65,000, Japan ~$33,000, China ~$12,500, Vietnam ~$4,100, and India ~$2,500. Korea's rapid economic growth over the past 60 years is one of the most remarkable stories in global economic history.

4. Limitations of This Calculator

This tool uses nominal exchange rates rather than PPP (Purchasing Power Parity). Cost of living varies dramatically between countries, so nominal income comparisons don't fully capture living standards. The data is based on approximate 2024 figures and should be treated as a general reference.
