Complete Guide to Korean Residential Electricity Bills

Understanding your electricity bill in Korea can be confusing due to the tiered progressive pricing system (nujinje). Unlike flat-rate systems in some countries, Korea's residential electricity rates increase as you use more power. This calculator applies the latest 2026 KEPCO residential rates to help you estimate your monthly bill accurately.

1. How the tiered pricing system works

Korean residential electricity uses a 3-tier progressive system. The first 200 kWh costs 120 KRW/kWh, the next 200 kWh (201-400) costs 214.6 KRW/kWh, and everything above 400 kWh costs 307.3 KRW/kWh. This means the more you use, the more expensive each additional unit becomes. The basic charge also increases with your tier: 910 KRW for Tier 1, 1,600 KRW for Tier 2, and 7,300 KRW for Tier 3.

2. Additional charges: VAT and Power Industry Fund

On top of the basic charge and energy charge, two additional fees are applied: Value-Added Tax (VAT) at 10% and the Power Industry Infrastructure Fund at 3.7%. These are calculated on the subtotal of basic charge plus energy charge, making the final bill about 13.7% higher than the base charges.

3. Tips to reduce your electricity bill

The most effective strategy is keeping your monthly usage under 200 kWh to stay in Tier 1. Use energy-efficient appliances, set your AC to 26°C or higher, utilize timers and smart plugs to eliminate standby power, and consider using fans alongside AC to improve air circulation. LED lighting can reduce lighting costs by up to 80% compared to incandescent bulbs.

4. Summer electricity bills

Summer months (July-August) see the highest electricity bills due to air conditioning. A typical AC unit running 8 hours daily can add 400-600 kWh to your monthly usage, easily pushing you into the highest pricing tier. Planning your AC usage and maintaining your unit (clean filters, proper refrigerant levels) can help manage costs.
